A survival kit is a useful item to prepare for outdoor activities that would take you away from civilization for a period of time. If you are not getting out of Singapore, you would find limited use of such a kit, however, if you are going hiking in Malaysia or even scuba diving off East Malaysia, having a ready packed kit is useful.

The kit should consist of items that would be extremely useful to a survival situation. It can't have too many items as well, as it would be too cumbersome to bring around. Around 10 of the most important items you can determine would be ideal for such a kit. The SAS (Special Air Service, the British special forces) survival kit comes in the size of a 10x7x2.5cm tin box, but you can make yours larger, if you need to. Here is a list of items you could bring along. You should add or remove stuff that you think will or will not be useful.

  • Red Light stick (To attract attention to be rescued)
  • Mirror (To attract attention to be rescued)
  • Whistle (To attract attention to be rescued)
  • 1 box full of Matches / Flint (Starting fires)
  • Magnifying Glass (Start fires)
  • 5 x 50 cm Metal Wires (Multiple uses, including making snares, tying stuff together)
  • Fishing Hooks/Weights/Line(To catch fish)
  • Compass (To move around)
  • Knife and/or saw (Cut stuff)
  • Cordage (Tie things together)
  • Sewing Kit (Multiple uses, mainly to join 2 soft material together)
