The timber hitch is used to secure a rope to an object. The intention is to drag or move that object and the timber hitch facilitates this. An example would be...to move planks of wood with a crane. You can apply the timber hitch so that this can be done.

Step 1: Bring the rope around the object you are doing to tie the timber hitch. Bring the working end around the standing end as shown.

 | Step 2: Wrap that end around itself as shown. A minimum of three turns is recommended. More turns can be applied for a better grip as there is more friction between the object and the rope to itself, thereby reducing the chances of the timber hitch becoming undone. |
