When you encounter a victim with a burn wound, the first thing you need to do is to identify the seriousness of the injury. If the person is on fire or still in contact with the cause of the burn, douse the fire or remove contact. Also be aware of your surroundings and make sure both you and the victim are not in danger before administering first aid.

Step 1:
Access seriousness of burn. Refer to article on burns and scalds. Also access the extent of the burn. A first degree burn larger than half your palm or a second and third degree burn should be refered for immediate medical attention.

Step 2:
Run the burnt skin under running water for at least 10 minutes. If the burn is extensive, skip this step to rush the victim to receive immediate medical attention. If running water is not available, wash the wound with whatever clean water you have.

Step 3:
If possible, remove any items from the person like watches, rings or clothing. If the clothing has stuck to the skin, do not remove it.

Step 4:
Cover the burn with sterile dressing. The best is to use a non-stick bandage. Cotton or other fluffy material that could stick to the wound should be avoided. Wrap the dressing loosely around the burn.

Step 5:
Send victim for medical attention as required. If burn is determined to be minor, let the victim rest and avoid contact with burnt part.

Notes:
Do not apply any lotion or creams to a burn.
Do not attempt to peel the skin or burst any blisters.
