The most basic way to find north with the sun is to understand that in the morning, the direction where the sun shines from is east. In the evening, that direction changes to the west. This technique is only useful during the time window when the sun is clearly in a certain direction (between sun rise to around 11am and between 4pm to sunset). In the afternoon it is not reliable at the equator. Neither is it reliable at night.

Another more reliable way to find the East/West line is to plant a stick into the ground.

Place a Stick in the Ground
Step 1:

Place a stick around a meter into the ground.
Mark the point where the shadow ends with a marker
Step 2:

A shadow will form. Mark the tip of the shadow with a stone or sticks.
Mark the second spot after 15 minutesStep 3:

Wait for at least 10 minutes. The shadow would have moved towards an easterly direction. Mark the new spot with another marker.
You now know where North isThe line that forms between the 2 marked out spots is the East/West line. Note the first point marked out is ALWAYS the West. This is due to the consistent movement of the Sun from East to West.
Place a Stick in the GroundThe diagram shows the theory of this method as explained above. The first position of the sun and marker is shown in Step 2 and the second position of the sun and marker is shown in Step 3.
