Cooking rice is not too difficult. The main difficulty is estimating the correct amount of water to use and preventing it from being burnt on the sides.
 | Step 1: Pour the rice into a mess tin. Around a quarter full of rice is the maximum you can put in the mess tin (rice expands when cooked). |
 | Step 2: Clean the rice. This is done by rinsing the rice in clean water two to three times, till the water poured away is fairly clear. If you are short of water, you would want to do this just once and 'massage' the rice well. You could also soak the rice for a while, to reduce water required to cook later. |
| Step 3: Add water to the rice for cooking. Adding the right amount of water requires some practice and really depends on the cooking conditions. If you have a cover, around 1.5 parts of water to 1 part of rice should be good. If you do not have a cover, 2 parts of water to 1 part of rice will be better, to account for water lost due to boiling.

Step 4: Put the mess tin over a hot fire. What you should aim to do is to get the water to a boil. Covering the mess tin will ensure it cooks faster. |

Step 5: Once the water is boiling, put the mess tin over a slower fire. This will prevent the rice at the sides and bottom from burning when the water is absorbed by the rice. Let it cook till almost all the water is gone.

 | Step 6: Remove from fire and let the rice sit. It should be ready to eat in 5 minutes after you have removed it from the fire. Fluff the rice (mix it around) for a better texture. |
