A tee-pee or tipi fire is a fire that looks like a tee-pee, which is conical tent. Perhaps you would remember them best as the type of tent used by red indians.

A wood stack of a tee-pee design follows the tent design. It is essentially large branches or logs of wood that are leaned onto each other to for the primary design. In the middle, small branches and tinder are added to get the fire going first.

Below are the steps you could follow to build your own tee-pee fire.

Items you need:

Blocks of wood: Either thick branches or small logs. You will need between 4 to 10 pieces to make the frame.

Tinder / Branches / Twigs: This will get the fire going when you light it

Step 1:

Build the tee-pee frame with your log pieces.

Depending on the type of logs you are dealing with, you may have difficulty doing this. Logs that are not perfectly conical work best as they have branch stubs and grooves that help lock them into place.

Step 2:

Once your tee-pee is setup, you will notice that the center is rather empty. This open space can be utilised by stuffing it with branches and tinder or whatever material that you have that will burn easily.

This will give the fire its starting fuel before it can consume the logs, which usually take a longer time to start burning.

Step 3:

Your tee-pee fire at this stage is ready to go. However you can do a few small improvements, before setting it on fire. There will be openings on the side that is not covered by the log pieces. These openings can be covered with long branches. This outer layer of branches will rest on either the log pieces or the branches stuffed into the center.

Tee-pee Wood Pile

And there you have it, your wood pile is setup and ready to go.

Make sure you have a small opening to insert your torch.
