Setting up a Fire Pit

When you intend to start a fire in a location, you have to realise that after it is all over, you will leave a big black charred stain on the ground. Damages maybe more severe if the fire is done on concrete or tiles.

The solution is to build a temporary platform to keep the fire above the ground and hence not damage it. This article explains the simplest possible solution and is by no means the only solution to having fire pit. It uses all the parts you can rent from nalno.com as well.

The pit comprises of 12 zinc sheets (90cm x 70cm) which will combine to make a platform around the size of 160cm x 160cm. 30 bricks are used to support the double layered design of the pit. The top layer will serve the obvious function of holding up the fire. At its hottest, you can observe the part in direct contact with the fire turn a molten red (don't worry, it wont melt). The bottom layer serves several functions including:
  • Creating 2 airflow layers between the ground and fire instead of 1
  • Reflecting most of the radiated heat from the fire
  • Acts as a secondary platform, in case the top level fails

6 bricks on the ground

Step 1:

Lay out six bricks for the first row of zinc sheets.

Check sheets lie nicely ontop of bricks

Sometimes when you put a sheet on, it will bend inwards. When facing this situation, flip it around.

Bricks need not be on the edge

Bricks shown are not right at the edge.

Get the next row prepared

Step 2:

Lay out the bricks for the middle row and place the zinc sheets ontop.

First Layer Done

Step 3:

Do the same for the last row and you have one layer of platform done

Place bricks for the second layer

Step 4:

Put all the bricks directly ontop of the bricks below as shown.

Bricks should align ontop of one another

Bricks are directly ontop on one another. You can feel for the bricks in the middle (which you cannot see when putting the bricks ontop) by pressing down.

Place the second layer ontop

Step 5:

Place the top layer ontop and you are done!

Design of bricks layout

Summary of the design

The graphic image shows how all the bricks were layed out with the zinc sheets. The center where the fire will be is re-enforced with more bricks to support the fire right in the center. The bricks on the sides need not be right at the side, they could be perhaps 10 to 20 cm in for better support of the platform.

Some people will claim you need wet sand, but the fact remains that you do not. A double layered platform works better at keeping heat off the ground and creates far less mess!
